Australia leading the way in battery storage

Australia is leading the way in residential battery storage, a new report released by Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel has found, with nearly 21,000 battery storage systems installed in homes across the country in 2017 – three times as many as the previous year.

“We are now not only the world leader in the use of rooftop solar, but also the world leader in the installation of residential battery storage by power capacity,” Minister Frydenberg said.

The report shows that the cost of batteries is declining as Australia’s technology, manufacturing and market competition is advancing and confirms the critical role energy storage will play in the transformation of Australia’s electricity system.

“As more renewable energy – mainly in the form of solar and wind power – enters our electricity grid, the need for energy storage solutions grows,” Minister Frydenberg said.

“This is why the Government put energy storage on the agenda – to deliver a more affordable and reliable energy system for Australians.

“We supported the development of Australia’s first virtual power plant in 2017, comprising 1000 households and businesses, and have since funded the development of another, providing a further 1200 batteries to homes.

“We’ve also funded the installation of three large-scale batteries across Victoria and South Australia and we’re exploring, upgrading and expanding several pumped hydro energy storage projects that benefit the whole National Electricity Market.

“Going forward, the National Energy Guarantee will require energy retailers to ensure they have sufficient reliable energy including storage, making certain there is always energy available to meet our needs.”

We began our building journey with Occman Homes late 2019. We were a little hesitant to build at first due to past experiences but after our initial consult with both Rob and Jose we were immediately put at ease.

Occman Homes were very professional, super organised and had great ideas along the way to help us to save costs. We had received other quotes from ‘volume’ builders and were very surprised that Occman Homes could build our dream home around the same budget.

Their suppliers are all very experienced and professional in helping pick the right products, making the process very easy and enjoyable. Occman Homes were also very flexible when we wanted to choose and purchase from other suppliers. Even when an unexpected health crisis hit our family, Rob and his team were patient and understanding and we were very confident to leave many of the decisions in their hands.

Their communication throughout the entire build process was outstanding, Rob and Jose always kept us up to date with the progress and were regularly invited for site meetings to chat about changes/ideas if needed. We have now lived in our house for 6 months and couldn’t be happier. The quality and finishes are exceptional and they have been quick to resolve any of our few minor defects. The house that Occman Homes built for us was to become our family home so we wanted to make sure we were getting something for a long time. We did not think that we could afford a private builder however after some luck we found Occman Homes who could match the national builders prices but beat them on quality and service. From the early planning stages, we had so much flexibility in the choices we made for the house, and the team at Occman were great at suggesting smart ways to save money in some areas in order to get the best out of our build.
